Star Center Students Learn from Special Guest

November 21, 2017 - Today, a special guest, Susan Sepe, visited classrooms throughout Star Center Elementary.  Susan is blind, but she does some amazing things.  The students of Star Center were able to spend time learning from Susan about what it means to be blind and how blind people can do things that everyone else can do but often just in a different way.

Susan taught the children about reading and writing braille, why she uses a white cane and her guide dog Laverne, what to do when you see a guide dog in public, and how technology such as her iPhone assists her in her everyday life.  The children enjoyed a story read by Susan from her special braille book.  Each child received handmade braille cards that taught them the alphabet in braille and allowed them to decode their name and a special message Susan left for each of them in braille.

Thank you to Susan for volunteering your time!  The students enjoyed learning from you!
